We are excited to have our very own Annie Walters with us on Thursday, January 16 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am to make a special presentation about Social Security. As a Public Affairs Specialist, Annie is responsible for education and outreach. She will give a presentation for LVCN and our community, and will cover the following topics during the presentation:
· We will discuss your lifelong Social Security protections. Social Security touches nearly every person at some point in their life. It helps children when a parent dies, retires, or becomes disabled. It protects workers and their families in the event of a disability. For millions in old age, it puts food on the table or contributes extra income. And it continues providing for our families even after we’re gone.
· Medicare is our country’s health insurance program for people age 65 or older. We will discuss how certain people younger than age 65 can qualify for Medicare, too, including those with disabilities and those who have permanent kidney failure.
· We encourage financial planning. We will encourage participants to create a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Workers can use this account to get estimates of their future benefits for financial planning, including using a retirement calculator. They can also check the earnings information we have for them. This is important because we base our benefit calculations on earnings. People who already receive benefits can use their account to take care of their Social Security business (including a replacement of a Social Security card, or a verification of benefits, etc.). It’s free, fast, and secure.
The presentation is approximately 45 minutes and we will have 15 minutes of questions and answers at the end. This presentation can be adjusted to add or subtract certain topics of interest and make appropriate for young working adults and beyond.
